You love your house. It would be absolutely perfect for you – except for that one room; the one that just doesn’t work for you. The one that makes you question judgment, if not the sanity, of the people who built or last remodeled your house. What can you do to at least salvage some of the worse basic design flaws and turn a chaotic room into a room that works for?

Let’s look at a few common room flubs and how you can fix them.

An Out of Place Column

Whatever the reason, a column that sticks out in the middle of a room is a challenge. It may have a lot of space, but with something cutting it off, your options are going to be limited. You cannot simply knock a load-bearing structure down, so all you can really do is be creative in working around it. You can have cabinets built around the offending column. Build a bar around it. A bar right in the middle of your basement may make little sense but at least it took care of that wayward column. Another option is turning it into a hanging post of some sort – at least make use of its strength and hang some heavy things off it. If those cannot be done, you can try to hide it or make it pretty. A variety of column wraps are available and there are choices to suit any theme you might have going.

Slanted Ceiling

This room is okay except for the fact that you simply can’t walk on one side without stooping or banging your head on the ceiling. There are a variety of fixes for this type of room – if it is spacious enough, the slanted part can be reused for storage by building in a set of cabinets there. If it is less than spacious, you can cut the flow of traffic out of that area by adding some low furniture like chairs or even a futon depending on the purpose of the room. Complete this effect with a modern area rug to direct traffic flow.

A Large Wall With a Small Window

There is nothing wrong with a large, featureless wall. It is when a small window is the only thing breaking the monotony of that wall would the problems start to arise. The proportions looking off is something that you simply cannot ignore. And guests asking the same questions over and over can get old real quick. A trick here is to use curtains that extend well beyond the window’s frame. This will create the illusion that the window is only partially open and that it is bigger than it really is. A well-placed mirror on the opposite wall will complement the illusion and make it more seamless.

Old, Tired Carpet

Should your budget prevent you from replacing your old, faded carpet, there are things you can do to buy time. A natural flokati area rug can be placed to create contrast and draw attention away from the old carpet. You can place wool flokati rugs on high traffic areas to hide the most worn-out spots on your carpet. These are just some tips you can use to provide painless solutions to most problems.
